Hot Cross Buns
Easter is not complete for me without these delicious traditional English treats (this fabulous recipe taken from Paul Hollywood at the BBC Good Food Magazine). It is definitely worth finding the time to make these with your kids at least once. It takes all day but kids love making the dough and watching it rise. And don't forget the yummy treat at the end! You can't beat these halved, toasted and covered in lashings of butter. Yummmmm

Materials
- 1 apple (peeled, cored and finely chopped)
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 tbsp sunflower oil
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp salt
- 300ml full-fat milk, plus 2 tablespoons more
- 500g strong bread flour
- 50g butter
- 50g mixed peel
- 75g caster sugar
- 75g sultanas
- 7g sachet of fast action yeast
- zest 1 orange
Instructions
- Follow directions at: www.bbcgoodfood.com
Tips
- To pipe the crosses I used a plastic zip-lock bag - simply fill with the white dough and then cut a very small hole in the corner of the bag. Slowly squeeze the bag to "draw" the cross on top of the bun
- If you can't find mixed peel you can use a selection of coarsely grated zest - orange, lemon, lime and grapefruit are all good.
- US bakers: The Sultana is the same as a Thompson's Seedless Raisin (i.e. a white grape raisin). Bakers Sugar can be substituted for Caster Sugar.
